The advantages of split-cell photovoltaic panel technology
The main advantages of split-cell modules for users are 2 to 3 % higher yields and higher overall efficiency. In a split-cell module, the standard whole cells are cut into two equal halves. In addition, the module is also divided into a top half and a bottom half, on which the split cells are arranged.
By splitting the cells, the power generated per cell is halved and the resistance losses at the cell and module level are reduced to a quarter. In addition, the halved current can significantly reduce the temperature in the cells and thus the risk of hot spot effects.
The three small junction boxes, each equipped with a single bypass diode, also transfer less heat to the cells underneath. These factors increase the longevity of the overall system and splitting the module in half also increases the overall efficiency. The generated current path is shortened by splitting the module, which additionally reduces resistance losses. Mounting the module vertically will also boost performance in shaded conditions. For example, if the lower part of the module is in a shaded area, users can still achieve 50 % efficiency with the upper half, as opposed to the output of a full-cell module that is completely switched off. An example can be the case of shadows cast within rows in pitched roof or orchard installations. Consequently, split-cell modules allow higher outputs and higher yields per system.
